The Rallis family, originating from Chios, is probably the most prominent Greek merchant family during the 19th century. Its members located in Britain, Trieste, Odessa and Constantinople (Istanbul), where they dominated the grain trade between the ports of the Black Sea and Western Europe. Since the middle of the 19th century, the Rallis house gradually withdrew from the Mediterranean and the Black Sea markets and expanded its business to Southern Asia and America. |

Rostov is situated on the banks of the Don, at the cove of the Azov Sea, near the port of Taganrog. From the middle of the 19th century, Rostov developed rapidly and this coincided with the relative decline in the ports of Odessa and Nikolayev. Russian wheat exported to Western European markets by Greek merchants. The presence of the Greeks continued dynamically up to the Russian Revolution where upon this course was terminated. |
